Historic Well Pump Memorialized At City Hall
Middletown’s City Hall was once a historic inn, tavern and stage coach stop. A well was dug with an accompanying “bucket” for water for the tavern. Later, well drilling technology ushered in a new concept with a bored well and a hand pump to supply water for the inn. The Wetherby House’s source of water came from this bored well until “city” water came to Middletown in the 1940’s.
This well was located under the new curved steps at the south entrance of City Hall’s new meeting room, so the pump had to be removed before construction began.
We memorialized this well pump and in this photo you will see Middletown’s arborist, Mark Timmons, who made the new wooden handle which is made from a Kentucky Yellow Poplar.
